Digital Bible Society Vision

Digital Bible Society VisionNobody in 16th century Europe could have imagined the impact Gutenberg’s unusual invention would have on history. Within years of its inception the printing press had turned the worlds economic, social, and spiritual order was on its head. Overnight, men like Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli, would discover that their message was spread like a whirlwind across Europe. The printing press paved the way for the Reformation; and the Reformation brought salvation to untold millions.

In the twentieth century another printing press emerged – the personal computer. And in the space of two decades, the PC dramatically transformed the economic and social order of our world. But the revolution is just beginning.

In September of 2002, the one billionth computer was manufactured. This feat took twenty five years, but it is estimated that by 2008, 2 billion computers will have been manufactured, with the majority of these being distributed in the hottest growing market in the world, Asia.

Another reformation is upon us.  Millions of souls are still without Bibles and Christian literature. We believe the new "printing press," will change this.

Digital Bible Society VisionIn the past, Bibles have cost missionary societies several dollars each to produce and ship. Now, an entire library with Bibles, audio-scriptures, evangelical media, commentaries, devotionals, inspirational works, and biographies can be reproduced on a quality computer disk for 50 cents. That same “CD” can be copied and given away in minutes. Imagine, an entire Christian library, resources worth thousands of dollars – taking up several meters of shelf space – copied freely in minutes and carried away in a shirt pocket.

The Digital Bible Society is aggressively committed to the distribution of God’s word to the people who need it most. We seek to support other ministries as they convert and distribute Christian literature. We are currently distributing our CD's at cost throughout China and Taiwan, with an Arabic library in the works.

We consider ourselves privileged to supply missionaries with resources at the cost of materials. Our dream is that there will never be a lack for the Holy Scripture in any language, in any nation. We welcome your help and partnership in this great endeavor.

Mary Jacob Jones (1784 –1864) was a Welsh Protestant Christian girl who, at age sixteen, inspired the founding of the British and Foreign Bible Society by walking twenty-five miles across the countryside to buy a copy of the Welsh Bible because she did not have one.

Rev. Thomas Charles (1755-1814) was a Welsh Nonconformist clergyman of considerable importance in the history of modern Wales, including the founding of the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1804.

In 1792, a little peasant girl in Llanfilhangel, Wales, named Mary Jones, became intrigued with the Bible and longed to read from its pages. As her parents were too poor to afford one, she went to a neighbor’s house and borrowed a New Testament. Her eyes fell on three words: Search the Scriptures.
Mary determined to purchase a Bible of her own, and for the next several years, she toiled with her hands sacrificing many other things in order to earn enough money to purchase her own copy of the Scriptures. Times were very difficult, pennies were hard to come by, and Bibles were rare. But in the spring of 1800, Mary walked 25 miles barefooted to a place called Bala, carrying her hard-earned money. She arrived there late in the day and found lodging with the local Methodist minister, but she could hardly sleep for the excitement of having a Bible of her own.
Early next morning, she proceeded to the house of Rev. Thomas Charles, who was reported to have Bibles for sale. Imagine her sorrow to learn that his stock of Bibles was exhausted. Her inconsolable grief so moved Thomas Charles that he said, “My dear child, I see that you must have a Bible. It is impossible to refuse you.” Finding a copy that had been promised to another, he gave it to her.
But that’s not the end of the story. Rev. Charles, deeply moved by that scene, developed a burning determination to do everything in his power to make the Bible available to any who desired it, to the millions in Christendom not having one.
He laid plans, garnered support, expended energy, and in 1894 the British and Foreign Bible Society was formed, the “granddaddy” of all the world’s Bible societies.
